One year since the High Court ruling on Ukrainian refugees: Exactly one year ago, our Firm acted against the decision of the Minister of the Interior to prevent the entry of refugees from Ukraine who fled their home country during the war. We turned to the High Court for assistance in order to do justice during a severe existential crisis, as the lives of our friends were in danger. The High Court intervened, determined that the Minister of the Interior acted without authority, annulled the decision and brought about the reunification of Israeli families with their loved ones who fled the warzone. We saved thousands of people from a cruel fate.
Today, a year later, reality proved that we were right, and the state did not collapse under the burden of refugees from Ukraine.
It is difficult to grasp that if the judicial overhaul came to pass, the High Court would not have been able to overturn the decision of the Minister of the Interior. Those who would have suffered from this would be the citizens of Israel, as well as the state itself.
This is just one example. In our field there is no right or left, everyone will be harmed if the government controls the judiciary, and its power to protect the citizens from wrong and unjust decisions will be significantly curtailed. Our clients are both right-wing and left-wing, both secular and religious. We need to unite and come to an understanding – for the benefit of us all.
