This morning I was interviewed at ynet news to tell the story of Fatim Kita.
Fatim came to Israel from Mali in Africa eight years ago when she was only 17 years old.
Like many women in Africa, Fatim also went through the horrible ritual of a woman’s circumcision when she was a child. The fear from second circumcision made Fatim fled Mali and come to Israel.
When she arrived in Israel, she was a minor and we applied for asylum for her.
After many battles against the Interior Ministry that did not recognize her as a refugee, we were able to gain a status of Israeli residency for humanitarian reasons.
Now, the Ministry of Interior has canceled her residency status and wants to send her back to Mali, although she is still in danger and also her two-year-old daughter, who may face a similar cruel fate.
We in the office struggle for them, so they can stay in the country and be safe.
