Asylum seekers from Darfur in Sudan have been living in Israel for years under temporary protection but with almost no rights, even though they are internationally recognized as refugees. The way a society treats refugees is a major test for the existence of human rights and many in Israel do not notice how much human suffering the refugees endure due to their lack of rights.
Yagoub is an asylum seeker from Sudan who fled his country and arrived in Israel a decade ago. His daughter, who also fled Sudan to South Sudan, had to undergo surgery due to a complex medical condition. According to the practice in South Sudan, the daughter must present herself for surgery together with her father, who of course also wanted to be by her side and support her. Yagoub contacted us to help him obtain a Travel Certificate and permission from the Ministry of the Interior to travel to his daughter’s surgery and return to Israel. Usually the Ministry of the Interior refuses such requests, but this time, with precise and determined representation, we obtained a certificate and visa for Lagov very quickly (less than a month!) that would allow his return so he could travel to his daughter’s surgery. The fast and professional treatment was provided by Adv. Michael Cohen-Ad.
